Fall is going and so is SQL

Wow another semester over and Databases and SQL coming out of my ears. Well I will have to admit that when I started this semester I was really intimidated by the thought of learning SQL and learning how to manage a DB. Now I really had several problem with Java as the instructor was not very good not did he cut you any slack. If your work wasn't right wouldn't take points off he would just give you a zero and go on. Now I thought that was really unfair so I was really skeptical. At first I really didn't understand. I looked at assignment 5.3 and I was baffled. So I took an extra week and got 5.3 and 6.3 done and really didn't have a problem. I just took some extra time to study the language and worked it out. Now that makes me feel good to be able to work something like that out on my own.

Managing a DB on the other hand was totally different. I would say that I had experience with certain DB's namely SIMS-E which is how the army tracks its vehicles. I just didn't really understand how it all went together. We learned how to develop a DB and then make improvements. We learned how all of the parts interacted with each other through ER diagrams and that really made sense on what a company would do as we did our group work. It just goes to show that when you simulate real life scenarios in your groups that everyone benefits. Now on to IT accounting.... I wish everyone good luck.

Fall is here and so is a new semester. CIS305 and CIS 321

Well after looking at the books and reading the first few chapters I am really excited about the courses. Oracle is one of the premier Data Management Systems and playing around with has been kind of neat. The main reason to learn how to design database systems is in a real world enviornment you can organize and conduct your business in a newly successful way. I feel that companies like Oracle are revolutionizing the way that they do business and with the aquisition of Java the world is limitless.

Design of database systems is an important task in any business. I feel that the most important thing this semester is going to be the case studies and groups. That is how we are going to get the experience just like project management. We were able to take a project and using our teams successfully develope a project that was fully functional and I am looking forward to doing that again.

Wow the end of summer and the end of another Semester CIS 340A and CIS 406

Wos now I can honestly say that everything so far I have been able to relate to Army life in some way. For Security Management I have learned that sometimes the government does not care about certain things and as far as Network location security most of the locations I have visited are always the same and not secured. I have learned the steps necessary to take precations to protect my password and other PKI information since the Army network functions on a PKI infastructure with Certificates. Learning more about how to navigate the net more securely has really given me inspiration to take initiative and pass along this valuable information.

Telecommunications is not directly relateable to Army life, but it has helped me evaulate how things are going. The Army is still using old technology as far as telecommunications goes, but I have been exposed to it when I worked part time troubel shooting Internet. I have learned that telecommunications does not just relate to the phone is all also has to do with your network as many business use technology like the Avaya Phonesoft that bridges information coming on analog phone lines and is digitized so your customers information is automatically populated so to save you time. Now with the modern advances in this field more companies can start to save both time and money. I really enjoyed being apart of these classes and feel that I really learned a lot.

A new semester begins- CIS 340A Business Telecommunications and CIS 406 Information Security

Well it has been a nice week off, but back to business with two more new classes this semester. I feel confident that I will learn a lot of new things to add to my focus of what IT and business is about. In the army I personally don't deal much with telecommunications only radio problems from the aircraft which does not really have anything to do with business. I do know that communication between businesses is a lifeline. Telecommunications not only allows businesses to sell and gain information from consumers and prospective consumers, but it also keeps businesses in touch with each other. It can keep the webstore for example in touch with the warehouse or allow a potential customer complete a survey. I am very interested to learn more.

Information Security is an important part of not only out systems at work, but our home PC's as well. Antivirus software is just a small part of the entire package that involves Information security. Most businesses do indeed use antivirus software, but they also have enterprise software in place to secure all aspects of the systems such as computers, phones, and other means of commerce. I am starting to get the picture that all of these courses are starting to fit together such as information secutiry and ecommerce and project management as well as telecommunications. I am very excited about how things will go this semester.

The end of another semester CIS 405 and CIS 433; what a rush!!!!

Wow, we have been really busy over the past eight weeks and I have really learned a lot. Juggling the army and being in the field for 29 days has proved difficult, but I am happy that I made it through. E-commerce is a great thing to study especially if you want to move up in the IT field or any industry. We have learned how to set up a website and of course the right and wrong way to make money. We were given the chance to write a paper for a recommendation on how to improve a website. I feel that my paper will be used in real life; because it has given me a chance to look into and actually study security measures for new online business owners. This will especially benefit me because I know now what measures need to be in place if I plan to dabble in e-commerce.

Project management on the other hand has been a totally different ball game. I know from the past few weeks especially. It seems like I have been pulled in a millions directions and that is exactly what project managers go through. They have to keep the project scope intact as well as balance the budget and keep the project on schedule. They may also struggle with being technical themselves and that could be a conflict with the team in the fact that the manager may try to over step his/her bounds. It is important for a project manager to be able to multitask and still be able to get the job done. I get a lot of this in the army and it will pay off to have this experience and know what to look for.

Starting my final path towards graduation; a technical journey. CIS 405 & 433 April 2009

I will have to say that I am finally glad to be in the home stretch of my Degree. I must say for the past 11 years things have seemed to be a struggle to finish my degree, but I am really glad to have finally found a home at Bellevue. I must say I have had a technical background it seems all of my life and I try to keep up with my technical lifestyle as well as learn new things. I have my A+ and NET+ certifications thanks to the University and the financial support of the US Army and I am involved on troubleshooting the integrated systems of the AH-64D Apache Longbow on a daily basis so anything technical is like candy to me.

E-Commerce should be familiar to all of us. Just by logging into the Blackboard or ordering books fromt he bookstore; we are involved in E-Commerce. Just by ordering anything online we are already fundamentally knowledgeable of how the system basically works. I feel that given the course descriptions everything should be good to go except for diagnosing how current trends in technology affect the E-Commerce implementations. In fact in the case of the Global War on Terror internet secutiry it seems has been beefed up all over the world and with things changing on a daily basis I feel that it would be impossible to follow all of the current developements and then determine how they will affect society.

These final cohort courses do fit well into my career plans and dreams. What I learn in all of these CITB classes will determine how much experience I have at the end of my journey to be able to approve what it takes to lead an IT team. I do feel very well about what I currently know, but I am always open to learning new things.

As far as project management goes I am very verst in the subject as I have seen a lot of projects come, change and go in the Army. Especially for Information Assurance as the worlds Internet Security continues to change. Annualy all personnel are required to take mandatory courses explaining how everyone must keep information secure and how to avoid "leaks". But with all of these technically advance projects going on how does one learn how to protect a laptop kept in a car with DoD personaly information on it from getting stolen. I feel that the real lesson to be learned from projects is it is not always wise to waste millions of dollars on how to protect Department of Defense information when you can't teach the employees or soldiers common sense.
